flag disposal

Disposal of Unserviceable Flags

The Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags is outlined in Resolution No. 440, passed by the 19th National Convention of The American Legion in New York, Sept. 20-23, 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual since that date.

The Shelbyville American Legion Post 70, the 40 & 8, and the Shelbyville Veterans of Foreign
Wars (VFW) Post 2695 jointly hold an annual Ceremonial Flag Disposal Service.

The ceremony takes place on Flag Day, June l4.

Area residents who have unserviceable flags are asked to drop off the flags at the VFW or Legion Post prior to June 14.

This is a good time to properly dispose of old, tattered, worn out flags in a dignified manner. Please do not just wad them up and throw them in the garbage.

The public is encouraged to attend this solemn ceremony.
